Spiritual Principles - For Today

Deuteronomy 22:1-23:25
We read the detailed instructions regarding morality. We feel that we are in another world, the world of ancient Israel. Nevertheless, we get hints, here and there, of the timeless, spiritual principles, which are still applicable to us today. Deuteronomy 23:5 – “The Lord your God loves you.” Deuteronomy 23:14 – “”The Lord your God moves around in your camp to protect you and hand your enemies over to you.” God gives us His guidelines for life because He loves us and wants to protect us from everything that would endanger our enjoyment of His blessing.

The true God and the false gods

Deuteronomy 20:1-21:23
The conflict between the Israelites and the other nations was really a conflict between the true God and the false gods (Deuteronomy 20:17-18). Everything in life must be seen in connection with our relationship to God: Are we being true to Him? Or, are we being false? We must seek to do what “the Lord considers right”, what is “clean” in His eyes (Deuteronomy 21:9,23).

The spiritual dimension must never be forgotten.

Deuteronomy 18:1-19:21
“The land the Lord you God is giving you” (Deuteronomy 18:9; Deuteronomy 19:1,8,10,14): In all the practical instructions given to the people of Israel, there is always this reminder of the spiritual dimension. They are the people of God. They have been blessed by the Lord. They are to live as people who appreciate God’s blessing. The spiritual dimension must never be forgotten. We are not talking only about social matters. We are talking about the life of God’s people, “the redeemed of the Lord.”

Opening Up God's Word: Deuteronomy 7:7-8 and 8:17-19

Deuteronomy emphasizes the importance of responding to the Lord right now.
 - We are reminded of the past, but we must not live in the past.
 - We are pointed to the future, but we must not daydream about the future.
  (1) One of Deuteronomy's main themes is the love of God.
God's love points us back to the past, to the death of Christ for our sins (Romans 5:8). It also points us forward, to the heavenly place that the Lord is preparing for His people (John 14:1-3).
God's love is not, however, something that belongs to the past - and it is not something that is kept for the future.
God loves us now. He loved us in the past - and He loves us now. God has not forgotten us - and He will not forget us.
We can face the future with the assurance that God loves us. He loves us with a love that will not let us go. He loves us with a love that will not let us down. He loves us with a purpose. He plans to bless us. His purpose of blessing is a purpose of love. He says to us, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31:3).
  (2) Another major theme of Deuteronomy is the land of promise.
In John 3:16, we learn that God's promise is given in love - and His "land" is "everlasting life."
For those who are trusting in Christ, "the land of promise" is not something in the distant future. We are in "the land of promise." Eternal life has begun It has begun - and now, we press on toward its fulfilment.
  (3) Deuteronomy stresses that the love of God and the land of promise are not to be taken for granted.
In Deuteronomy 7:7-8 and Deuteronomy 8:17-18, there are very clear warnings against the sin of spiritual pride.
 - How easy it is to forget how much God has loved us!
 - How easy it to forget the promises that God has given to us!
When we are tempted to forget the Lord - His love and His promises, we need to hear God's Word - "You shall remember the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 8:18).
When we are tempted to forget the Lord and become preoccupied with ourselves, the Word of God comes to us with this warning: "if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you this day that you shall surely perish" (Deuteronomy 8:19).
The Gospel is a message of joy and gladness - but not to those who have forgotten the Saviour, not to those who think only of their own good works.
The Good News of salvation does not begin with the word, "I" - 'I have done this. I have done that. I have done the other - therefore I will be saved.'
The Gospel cuts right across our human pride, and says, "Jesus saves."
This message brings joy and gladness - but only when truly believe it, only when we receive its truth into our hearts and minds, saying, with the hymnwriter, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; No merit of my own, I claim, But wholly trust in Jesus' Name. On Christ, the solid rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand."

The love of God is for every nation and every generation.

"Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one that the Lord loves rests between His shoulders" (Deuteronomy 33:12).
The Lord loves us. His love casts out our fear. His love gives us security. His love shields us. We rest in His love. There's a place in His heart for us. The love of God - This is the message which reaches out "to the ends of the earth" (Deuteronomy 33:17).
"The great love of God is revealed in the Son, who came to this earth to redeem every one. That love, like a stream flowing clear to the sea, makes clean every heart that from sin would be free. It binds the whole world, every barrier it breaks, the hills it lays low, and the mountains it shakes. It's yours, it is ours, O how lavishly given! The pearl of great price, and the treasure of heaven!" (Daniel Thambyrajah Niles). "All for your sake, all for my sake; yes, for all, I say: Now for the world comes news of salvation: 'Christ is born today!" 'Christ is born today!'" (From the Gujarati of Kahanji Madhavji Ranagrahi).
 * "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him ..." (Deuteronomy 34:9).
The love of God is for every nation - and it is for every generation. As God's work moves forward from one generation to the next generation, we must look to the Lord to fill us with His Spirit, to give us all that we need to rise to the new challenge of bringing Christ's Gospel of salvation to the people in today's world.

Lord, we celebrate Your love.

Deuteronomy 16:1-17:13
Lord, we celebrate Your love. We rejoice in Your salvation. Your love is a dying love. We see Your love in the death of Jesus, our Saviour. It's also an undying love. It's the only love that never dies. It never comes to an end. It's eternal love, shown to us in the sacrificial death of "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).

The Renewal Of Our Worship

‘Write this song, and teach it to the people of Israel’(Deuteronomy 31:19,22). Moses did not delay his obedience to God. ‘Write... Teach...’: God is speaking to us about the renewal of our worship. Don’t say, ‘It’s never been done that way before’- ‘the seven last words of the church’! Moses’ song was ‘a witness for God against the people of Israel’(Deuteronomy 31:19). It can still help us, in this generation, to confess our sin - We ‘have dealt corruptly with Him’(Deuteronomy 32:5) - and glorify our God - ‘I will proclaim the Name of the Lord’(Deuteronomy 32:3). Modern music can help us to hear afresh the ancient message: ‘Ascribe greatness to our God...’(Deuteronomy 32:3-4; Mission Praise, 40). Let us praise God ‘in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs’(Ephesians 5:18-20).

Pray For God's Mercy. Ask Him To Make You More Holy.

Deuteronomy 28:25-68

There is nothing inevitable about the chain of events described in these verses. These are the consequences of disobedience. God is warning His people: ‘If you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God…’(28:15). Why does God warn His people of the consequences of disobedience? He wants them to draw back from the way of disobedience and follow the pathway of obedience and blessing. These ‘curses’ were avoidable. They would only happen if Israel persisted in rebelling against the Lord. We can bring ‘curses’ upon ourselves. Don’t imagine that God doesn’t care how you live. He does. That is why He calls us back from the pathway of disobedience. That is why He exhorts us to choose holiness. Read Hebrews 10:26-31; 12:25-29. Pray for God’s mercy (Luke 18:13). Ask Him to make you more holy (Hebrews 12:14).

The Way Of Obedience Is The Way Of Blessing.

Deuteronomy 29:1-29

God has done great things for His people – ‘in the land of Egypt… in the wilderness’(2,5). Acknowledging Him to be the Lord their God, they were to live in obedience to Him (6,9). The way of obedience is the way of blessing. Moses warns the people that they must not depart from the way of blessing. Moses warns the people that they must not depart from the way of obedience (16-28). Turning away from the Lord leads to judgment – ‘anger and fury and great wrath’(24-28). There are ‘secret things’. There are ‘things that are revealed’. Some ‘things’ we will never understand. These ‘things belong to the Lord our God’. There are many ‘things’ we have learned and have firmly believed. ‘The things that are revealed’ are found in ‘the Holy Scriptures.’ Through God’s written Word, we are brought to ‘salvation’ and we are ‘thoroughly equipped’ for Christian living (29; 2 Timothy 3:14-17).

We thank You, Lord, for the Scriptures.

Deuteronomy 4:44-5:33
We thank You, Lord, for the Scriptures. They lead us to our Saviour - Jesus. The Scriptures speak to us of His suffering and our salvation. When we think of all that Jesus has done for us, may we receive, from You, the spirit of thanksgiving - joyful thanksgiving, heartfelt thanksgiving.

Still the same choice today

Deuteronomy 27:1-28:68
Obedience and blessing or disobedience and curse – This was the choice which was set before the people of God. It is still the same choice today. What a difference there is between the two ways – the way of obedience and the way of disobedience, the way of blessing and the way of curse. So much has changed since these words were written – yet the spiritual principles remain the same.

God's Giving To Us, Our Giving To Him

“You shall give to the Lord your God, as the Lord your God has blessed you” (Deuteronomy 16:10).
Our giving to the Lord can never be any more than a response to His giving to us. His giving to us is always greater than our giving to Him. There can be no comparison between His giving to us and our giving to Him. When we focus our attention on His giving to us, our giving to him will be transformed. It will not be legalism. It will be thanksgiving. No longer grudge-giving – “I have to”, or duty-giving – “I ought to”, it will be thanksgiving – “I want to.

Jesus is more than a prophet.

"The Lord your God  will raise up for you a Prophet ... to Him you shall listen" (Deuteronomy 18:15).
We read these words, and we think of the words spoken by God on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:5). There is a difference. Jesus is more than a prophet. He's God's Son. He's greater than Moses. He's greater than Elijah. They were God's servants. He's God's Son. When we realize that we have a Saviour - more than a prophet!, we will listen to Him, we will give ourselves to Him, and we will thank Him for giving Himself for us.
Why do we listen to Jesus? It's because He speaks the Word of the Lord - "I ... will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak to them all that I shall command Him" (Deuteronomy 18:18).  It's more than that! He is the Word of the Lord (John 1:1,14).
We give ourselves to Him because He has given Himself to us. We do not think much of our great devotion to him. We think much of His great love for us.
As I was reading about "the Prophet", I found my attention drawn to these words - "you shall not be afraid of him" (Deuteronomy 18:22). As I read this verse, I noticed that it's telling us that we do not need to be afraid of the false prophet. Satan has no authority over the Lord's people - "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper ... " (Isaiah 54:17). "you shall not be afraid of him" - I thought a bit more about this verse. I found my thoughts turning to Jesus, our Saviour. We don't need to be afraid of Him. He loves us. In fear, we come to Him. We know that He is holy. In love, He comes to us. He shows us that He is our Saviour. "His perfect love casts out our fear" (1 John 4:18).

Learning From God's Word: Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy 1:1-3:29
This is the continuing story of God's mighty working on behalf of His chosen people. He is leading them on to the land He had promised to them. Entering this land will not be easy. There will be plenty of opposition. The enemy will be defeated. The Lord will triumph over all who stand against Him.

Deuteronomy 4:1-6:25
There is a real challenge here - Continue in the way of the Lord. Don't turn back from following Him. This is important - not only for ourselves but for generations to come. The Word of the Lord must never be dismissed as something which is to be left in the past. Love for the Lord is not to be set aside as a thing of the past. We are to preserve the Word of the Lord for the next generation. The call to love God must be passed on those who come after us.

Deuteronomy 7:1-8:20
The contrast between God's people and those who worship false gods is so strong. It would be easy for God's people to feel superior. God's Word gives us no encouragement to have a superiority complex (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). How are God's people to remain true to Him when there are so many pressures to conform to the world? - We must remember that we need the Word of the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:3). Without His Word, we will be easy victims for Satan. The Lord warns His people - We must remember to obey Him, or we will, by our disobedience, bring ourselves under His judgment (Deuteronomy 8:19-20).

Deuteronomy 9:1-10:22
The Lord's people were on a 'journey' (Deuteronomy 10:11). They were journeying with Him. He was leading them in the way of His blessing. In our journey through life, how are we to experience an ever-increasing measure of God's blessing? - "Fear the Lord your God, follow all His directions, love Him, and worship Him (Deuteronomy 10:12). This is the way of blessing. It is "for your own good" (Deuteronomy 10:13).

Deuteronomy 11:1-13:18
God had blessed His people greatly. They were to live in obedience to Him. This is the way of further blessing (chapter 11). At the heart of our obedience to God, there is worship, true worship, worship which glorifies the Lord (chapter 12). At the heart of worship, there is to be the Word of God. Without the Word of God, we will be easily led astray (Deuteronomy 13:1-2). The central message to us here is summed up in Deuteronomy 13:4 - "Worship the Lord your God, fear Him, obey His commands, listen to what He says, serve Him and be loyal to Him."

Deuteronomy 14:1-15:23
"The Lord has chosen you to be His own special possession" (Deuteronomy 14:2). This is a great blessing - We have been saved by grace (Ephesians 2:5,8). "You are people who are holy to the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 14:21). Those who have been saved by the Lord are to live for Him(Ephesians 2:10). "Be generous to the poor and needy" (Deuteronomy 15:11) - Living for the Lord involves showing kindness to others. We have been loved by the Lord. We are to love others.

Deuteronomy 16:1-17:20
"Honour the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 16:1) - We are to worship the Lord. Our worship is to be filled with thanksgiving, praising the Lord for His redemption - "The Lord your God brought you out of Egypt." Moving from the land of bondage, we move, by faith, into the land of salvation: "You will enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You will take possession of it and live there" (Deuteronomy 17:14). As the Lord leads us on, our praise to Him increases. Let praise increase as grace increases.

Deuteronomy 18:1-19:21
"The land the Lord you God is giving you" (Deuteronomy 18:9; Deuteronomy 19:1,8,10,14): In all the practical instructions given to the people of Israel, there is always this reminder of the spiritual dimension. They are the people of God. They have been blessed by the Lord. They are to live as people who appreciate God's blessing. The spiritual dimension must never be forgotten. We are not talking only about social matters. We are talking about the life of God's people, "the redeemed of the Lord."

Deuteronomy 20:1-21:23
The conflict between the Israelites and the other nations was really a conflict between the true God and the false gods (Deuteronomy 20:17-18). Everything in life must be seen in connection with our relationship to God: Are we being true to Him? Or, are we being false? We must seek to do what "the Lord considers right", what is "clean" in His eyes (Deuteronomy 21:9,23).

Deuteronomy 22:1-23:25
We read the detailed instructions regarding morality. We feel that we are in another world, the world of ancient Israel. Nevertheless, we get hints, here and there, of the timeless, spiritual principles, which are still applicable to us today. Deuteronomy 23:5 - "The Lord your God loves you." Deuteronomy 23:14 - ""The Lord your God moves around in your camp to protect you and hand your enemies over to you." God gives us His guidelines for life because He loves us and wants to protect us from everything that would endanger our enjoyment of His blessing.

Deuteronomy 24:1-26:19
Doing "the right thing in the presence of the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 24:13), living "a long time in the land that the Lord your God is giving you" (Deuteronomy 25:15) - the two are vitally connected: obedience and blessing. Together with obedience and blessing, there is prayer. The blessing is not earned by our obedience. It is God at work, answering prayer (Deuteronomy 26:7). Together with the prayer which asks God for blessing, there is to be the prayer which thanks God for His blessing (Deuteronomy 26:8-10). We show our thanksgiving to the Lord by "faithfully obeying His Word with all our heart and with all our soul" (Deuteronomy 26:16). As we keep on obeying the Lord, He will keep on blessing us (Deuteronomy 26:18-19).

Deuteronomy 27:1-28:68
Obedience and blessing or disobedience and curse - This was the choice which was set before the people of God. It is still the same choice today. What a difference there is between the two ways - the way of obedience and the way of disobedience, the way of blessing and the way of curse. So much has changed since these words were written - yet the spiritual principles remain the same.

Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20
"Today I offer you life ... Choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:15,19). The meaning of these words concerning life is expanded on in Deuteronomy 30:16,20 - "Love the Lord your God." Loving God - This is what life is all about. This is life as He intended it to be. This is the meaning and purpose of life. This is to be the direction of our life.

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:52
Moses' time of leadership was coming to an end. Joshua would replace him as the leader of God's people. With God's command - "Be strong and courageous" - and promise - "you will bring the Israelites into the land that I swore to give them, and I will be with you" (Deuteronomy 31:23), Joshua set out into the work of the Lord. Moses still had a Word to bring to the people from the Lord - a Word which proclaimed the Lord as "a faithful God" (Deuteronomy 32:4) and called the people to be faithful to Him (Deuteronomy 32:5-6).

Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12
The Lord's work is moving on. the Lord's servant - Moses - is looking towards the future. He is pronouncing God's blessing on the people of Israel. He pays special attention to each tribe. There is a Word from the Lord for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. The people of Israel had been "blessed" - "a nation saved by the Lord" (Deuteronomy 33:29). The future lay with the whole people of God, as they moved forward together. there was, however, to be one man who was called to special leadership among the people - Joshua. For this work, Joshua was "filled with the Spirit" (Deuteronomy 34:9). The people of God were moving forward, but they would not forget where they had come from - how the Lord had led them. They remembered Moses (Deuteronomy 34:10-12) - and they gave thanks to God.

Praying Through God’s Word: Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy 1:1-46
Lord, You call us with Your challenge. You call us to make our choice. We are to put the past behind us. We are to press on into the future – with You and for You. We hesitate – and we end up doing nothing. Help us, Lord, to turn from our self-centred ways. Help us to walk with You in Your way – the way of faith, the way of obedience.
Deuteronomy 2:1-37
We thank You, Lord, that You are greater than all our problems. As we look back on the way You’ve led us, help us to say, “Grace brought me safe this far.” As we look to You to lead us into the future, help us to say, “Grace will lead me home.” Thank You, Lord for Your “amazing grace.”
Deuteronomy 3:1-29
Sometimes, Lord, Your blessing seems to be “so near and yet so far.” Help us, Lord, as we seek Your blessing, to remember that it is never our own achievement. It is always Your gift to us. We do not achieve victory in our own strength. You give to us Your victory. When, Lord, we feel like we are in a barren wilderness, help us to remember that the place of testing can become the place of triumph – when we put our trust in You.
Deuteronomy 4:1-43
Lord, You have saved us. Help us to serve You. In all our service, may we never forget Your salvation. May we always serve You with “the attitude of gratitude.”
Deuteronomy 4:44-5:33
We thank You, Lord, for the Scriptures. They lead us to our Saviour – Jesus. The Scriptures speak to us of His suffering and our salvation. When we think of all that Jesus has done for us, may we receive, from You, the spirit of thanksgiving – joyful thanksgiving, heartfelt thanksgiving.
Deuteronomy 6:1-25
Lord, we are called to fear You – and to love You. We tend to think that fear and love are opposites. You teach us something else, something very different. Fear and love belong together. You are the holy God, the God who cannot look upon our sin (Habakkuk 1:13). We fear You. You show us our sin so that we might be brought to Jesus, our Saviour. We come to Jesus. We learn how much You love us – and we begin to love You.
Deuteronomy 7:1-26
Lord, living for You is not easy. We have a fight on our hands. Satan is a determined enemy. Help us to remember that He’s also a defeated enemy. When the battle seems to be getting too much for us, help us to remember that we are “kept by the power of God” (1 Peter 1:3-5).
Deuteronomy 8:1-9:21
We thank You, Lord, that “we do not live by bread alone” (Deuteronomy 8:3). We need bread for the body. We also need Jesus, the Bread of Life (John 6:35). Help us, Lord, not to become too easily satisfied by the things of this world. Help us never to forget that we need Jesus. Without Him, there will always be something missing. With Him, there will be a new – eternal – sense of meaning, purpose and direction.
Deuteronomy 9:22-10:22
Help us, Lord, to listen to You and live for You, to speak to You and speak for You. Help us to receive from You and respond to You. Help us not to get caught up in the “What do I get out of it?” way of thinking. Help us to ask the more important question: “How can I give myself more fully to You, Lord?”
Deuteronomy 11:1-32
Lord, You give us Your promises and Your warnings. You show us the better way – and You say to us, “Make sure that You don’t go back to the old way of living, back to the world’s way of living, back to the way of life that will never satisfy.”
Deuteronomy 12:1-32
Who chooses what is important to us? Is it You, Lord? or Are we the ones who are in control?  Help us, Lord, not to pay lip-service to You – without really opening our hearts to You and giving You first place in our lives.
Deuteronomy 13:1-14:21
Lord, You are the God of love. You are also the God of holiness. We like to hear about Your love. It makes us feel good. We’re not so keen on hearing about Your holiness. You are the holy God. You are the God who calls us to be holy. Help us, Lord, not to be content with the half-truth, contained in the words, “All you need is love.” We do need love – but we also need holiness. Help us to “strive … for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).
Deuteronomy 14:22-15:23
Lord, You call us to belong to You. This is wonderful. It makes our hearts glad. You also call us to serve You. We’re not to remain what we were before we became Your redeemed people. We’re to be renewed – “beholding the glory of the Lord, we are being changed into His likeness from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Deuteronomy 16:1-17:13
Lord, we celebrate Your love. We rejoice in Your salvation. Your love is a dying love. We see Your love in the death of Jesus, our Saviour. It’s also an undying love. It’s the only love that never dies. It never comes to an end. It’s eternal love, shown to us in the sacrificial death of “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
Deuteronomy 17:14-18:22
Help us, Lord, to be obedient to Your Word. Help us, in our obedience, to remain humble. How can we possibly bring glory yo You if we’re thinking about how obedient we are when we should be rejoicing in the great love by which You have saved us and the great power by which You keep us walking in the way of faith? Even when we’re pressing on to a closer walk with You, help us never to forget this: “Who is a God like You, forgiving sin … ” (Micah 7:18-20).
Deuteronomy 19:1-20:9
By Your grace, Lord, You call us to be Your soldiers and servants. Help us not to be “fearful and fainthearted” (Deuteronomy 19:19). Help us to be “good soldiers of Jesus Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3). When we hear your challenging question: “Who is on the Lord’s side?”, may we give our committed answer: “By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine, we are on the Lord’s side; Saviour, we are Thine.”
Deuteronomy 20:10-21:23
We thank You, Lord, for Your amazing love – “while we were Your enemies we were reconciled to You by the death of Your Son” (Romans 5:10);  “Once we were no people but now we are Your people; once we had not received mercy but now we have received mercy” (1 Peter 2:10).
Deuteronomy 22:1-30
Help us, Lord, to be caring people. Where does this love for one another come from? It comes from Your love for us. Where there is a growing appreciation of Your love for us, there will be an increasing commitment to sharing Your love with others. Help us to love people without loving the ways of those who “live as enemies of the Cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18). May our love for them be a true expression of Your love for them. May it call them to return to You, to be forgiven by You, to make a new beginning with You.
Deuteronomy 23:1-25
Show us, Lord, what we really are – without You. Make us, more truly and more fully, what You want us to become – by Your saving grace. Fill us with Your holiness – and fill us with Your love. You’ve lifted us out of our sin and into Your salvation. This is Your doing. It’s not our own achievement. we’re called to be Your holy people – but we dare not imagine that we’re better than everyone else. We’re set apart for You – but we must never forget that we’ll never be anything more than sinners, saved by Your grace. Your love has reached. Your love changes us. Make us more like Jesus – walking with You on the pathway of holiness and reaching out, in love, to others, inviting them to receive the Saviour’s love and respond to His call: “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19).
Deuteronomy 24:1-25:29
We thank You, Lord, that You love us. We thank You that You have done great things for us. We think of Your great love. We think of all that You have done for us – and we say, “To God be the glory.”
Deuteronomy 26:1-27:10
Lord, You have saved us. You call us, now, to live in obedience to Your Word. Teach us Your way, Lord, and help us to walk in it. May the light of Your love shine upon us. May Your love for us fill us with more love for You.
Deuteronomy 27:11-28:24
Lord, You speak to us Your Word of warning – and Your promise of blessing. You call us back from the way of disobedience – and on to the pathway of obedience and blessing. Where does the blessing come from? Does it come from our obedience? No! It comes from Your love. It comes from Your promise. Your love reaches us in our sin. Your blessing increases in us as we learn to turn from our sin and give You first place in our lives.
Deuteronomy 28:25-68
Why, Lord, do You speak to us the Word of warning and the promise of blessing? There is a good way to which we must turn – and there’s also a bad way from which we turn. How can we really appreciate and embrace the good way if we do not see the clear contrast between the good way and the bad way? Help us, Lord, to choose the good way – to choose Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6).
Deuteronomy 29:1-29
Lord, Your Word speaks to us about the “secret things” and “the things that are revealed” (Deuteronomy 29:29). There are some “things” that we will never understand. These “things” belong to You, Lord. Help us to focus our attention on “the things that are revealed”, the teaching that comes to us from “the holy Scriptures”, the Gospel which brings us to Jesus, our Saviour – calling us to put our faith in Him and live in obedience to Him (2 Timothy 3:14-17).
Deuteronomy 30:1-31:13
Lord, You are not a god who keeps his distance from us. You are not a god who keeps his silence. You come near to us. You speak Your Word to us (Deuteronomy 30:11-14). How do we know that You are near to us? How do we know that You speak Your Word to us? Jesus is “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). He is “the Word made flesh” (John 1:14). Thank You for Jesus – He comes near to us and He speaks to us. Help us, Lord, to treasure His presence and to respond to His Word.
Deuteronomy 31:14-32:18
We sing to You, Lord. We sing our song of praise. It’s the song of Your salvation. It’s the song that gives glory to You. May our song of praise be more than words. May it be the song that arises from our hearts. May it be the song that comes from lives that are being transformed by Your grace.
Deuteronomy 32:19-33:17
Lord, You speak to us the Word of condemnation. You tell us that we are “a perverse generation” You tell us that “You will hide Your face from us” (Deuteronomy 32:20). You also speak to us the Word of compassion – “The Lord will … have compassion on His servants, when He sees their power is gone” (Deuteronomy 32:26). Help us, Lord, to hear the Word of condemnation – to know that “our power has gone”, so that we can hear the Word of compassion, the Word that comes to us in our weakness, the Word that brings us into Your strength – “a new creation in Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Deuteronomy 33:18-34:12
We thank You, Lord, that You are “the eternal God.” You are “our Refuge.” You hold us in Your “everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27). This doesn’t mean that life will be easy for us – but it does mean that You will be with us – whatever happens, and You’ll never let us down. You’ll always be there for us. You are “for us” – whatever problems we may have to face, may we learn to say, with triumphant faith, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Help us, Lord, to be obedient to Your Word.

Deuteronomy 17:14-18:22
Help us, Lord, to be obedient to Your Word. Help us, in our obedience, to remain humble. How can we possibly bring glory yo You if we're thinking about how obedient we are when we should be rejoicing in the great love by which You have saved us and the great power by which You keep us walking in the way of faith? Even when we're pressing on to a closer walk with You, help us never to forget this: "Who is a God like You, forgiving sin ... " (Micah 7:18-20).

Pardon For Sin, Strength For Today, Bright Hope For Tomorrow

“Be strong and of good courage … the Lord your God … goes with you …” (Deuteronomy 31:6).

As well as providing atonement for our sins, the Lord provides us with strength to live to His glory.  We give thanks for God’s gift of forgiveness – “In Christ we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7). We also give thanks that God has given the strength that we need to live for Him – “strengthened with power through His Spirit in our inner being” (Ephesians 3:16).
